The rise of national feeling in 19th century was caused by the influences of literature, music and arts. To the known personalities of this time belonguendthe componist Bedrich Smetana or Josef Zitek - the architect of the National Theatre. The theatre was built as a witness of growing patriotism, connecting all classes of people. The interior is decorated by the best known painters and sculptors, e.g. Frantisek Zenisek.
The theatre plays classical czech and international repertoir, Smetana, Dvorak, Verdi, Puccini, Bizet. Ballet is performed here as well.
